EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES IN US
In addition to Daughters of Norway Lodges and other Scandinavian organizations, there are many opportunities to learn about Nordic languages, cultures, histories, films, literature, etc. The following are mostly adult education classes, although some are for all ages. Note: Additional language classes are listed on the Language Links page.

- American Swedish Institute . . . Minneapolis, Minnesota — offers a historic museum with Swedish accents throughout. It features a variety of educational programs (including Swedish language classes), exhibits, lectures, cultural events & workshops. Offers something for all ages.
- American Swedish Historical Museum . . . South Philadelphia, Pennsylvania — offers a Swedish experience with events, exhibits, & educational experiences (including Swedish language courses).
- Arizona State University . . . Tempe, Arizona — offers special classes in Swedish, Norwegian and Scandinavian on topics of interest to students or facility.
- Augastana College . . . Rock Island, Illinois — offers a Scandinavian major which includes a four year course offering of Swedish & classes in Scandinavian screenplays, literature, culture, drama, and art. The school offers Swedish internships plus Scandinavian clubs & events.
- Bethany College . . . Lindsborg, Kansas — offers Swedish classes.
- Bethel University . . . St. Paul, Minnesota offers Swedish language classes.
- Brigham Young University . . . Salt Lake City, Utah — offers language classes (Danish, Finnish, Icelandic, Norwegian, Old Norse & Swedish) in addition to other cultural, environmental classes & a Scandinavian Choir.
- California Lutheran University . . . Thousand Oaks, California — features a Scandinavian Center. They offer a great calendar of events for students and visitors to enjoy including Scandinavian themed lectures, cultural events, and festivals (Scandinavian Festival in April). Swedish study abroad program is offered.
- Columbia University . . . New York, New York — has a Department of Germanic Languages and Literature which includes a Swedish and Finnish program. Also, several Scandinavian programs and classes (film, contemporary literature).
- Cornell University . . . Ithaca, New York — offers a Swedish program through the Department of German Studies. Swedish languages classes in addition to classes on Bergman films, Old Norse and Germanic Linguistics & the Icelandic Sagas. Cornell's Scandinavian Club welcomes Scandinavians and their friends and offers events including films, social events, and dinners. Opportunities for study abroad in Sweden and Scandinavia available. Cornell also has Scandinavian films in it's library.
- Concordia Language Village . . . Moorhead, Minnesota — offers classes for all ages (youth as young as 6 months to elders ages 55+) with classes and workshops/seminars in these Scandinavian languages: Danish, Finnish, Norwegian, Swedish.
- Danish American Center . . . Minneapolis, Minnesota — offers Danish cultural heritage classes, genealogy and events.
- Finnish Heritage Museum . . . Fairport Harbor, Ohio — offers Finnish language classes & cultural events. The newly formed museum is working on managing a collection that pays homage homage to Finnish Americans immigrants.
- Grand View College . . . Des Moines, Iowa — focuses not only on Danish language, literature & culture but also in it's Scandinavian Studies program offers history, culture/civilization, & drama/film courses.
- Gustavus Adolphus College . . . Saint Peter, Minnesota — offers a Scandinavia major or minor. There is a four-year Swedish language curriculum in addition to courses on Nordic history, culture, literature, film, sagas, contemporary society. Finnish and Sámi culture courses are also offered as well as Scandinavian study abroad and exchange programs.
- Harvard College . . . Cambridge, Massachusetts — offers Norwegian & Swedish Language and literature, drama, film classes in it's Germanic Languages and Literatures program.
- Indiana University at Bloomington . . . offers Norwegian language & Scandinavian culture courses.
- Luther College . . . Decorah, Iowa — offers a Scandinavian Studies major offering Norwegian language, writing & literature plus Scandinavian immigration, history, folk art & folklore. Study abroad in Norway program offered. Luther also offers various Nordic cultural events and programs.
- Minnesota State University at Mankato . . . has a Scandinavian interdisciplinary program that includes Norwegian and Swedish language courses in addition to Norse mythology, Scandinavian art and literature courses. Exchange programs available in Finland, Norway and Sweden.
- Nordic Heritage Museum . . . Seattle, Washington — offers craft " cooking classes, exhibits, events & a wonderful Nordic Museum.
- North Park University . . . Chicago, Illinois — offers a Scandinavian Studies program including languages classes (Swedish & Scandinavian language comprehension), Scandinavian drama, history, literature, arts, cultural, environmental, and contemporary society. In addition they host several community Scandinavian events, lectures, festivals, etc.
- Norwegian Language Institute . . . New York Univerisity, New York — is the number 1 resource for Norwegian language on the East Coast.
- Oglethorpe University . . . Atlanta, Georgia — offers non-credit Swedish language classes.
- Ohio State . . . Columbus, Ohio — offers Swedish language and other Scandinavian classes.
- Pacific Lutheran University . . . Tacoma, Washington — offers a Scandinavian Studies Program with a concentration either in Scandinavian Area Studies or Norwegian. Norwegian language courses & Scandinavian (including the Sámi) culture, society & literature courses are offered. There is a wide range of Scandinavian programs & a study abroad or internship program available.
- Portland State . . . Portland, Oregon — offers language classes in Danish, Finnish, Norwegian and Swedish in addition to various Danish literature and film courses, Icelandic Saga Class and Dramas of Ibsen. They offer study abroad programs to Denmark.
- Saint Olaf College . . . Northfield, Minnesota — boasts a Norwegian and Nordic Department. Norwegian language, film, history, art, literature, folklore, drama classes are offered in addition to internships & study abroad programs(Norway & Denmark).
- Scandinavian Community Center . . . Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada — provides several Nordic language classes (Finnish, Norwegian and Swedish), in addition to Scandinavian cultural programs, classes and events.
- Scandinavian Cultural Center . . . at Pacific Lutheran University, Tacoma, Washington — is devoted to sharing Scandinavian culture and heritage. It has an artifact collection that provides a glimpse at the past. Norwegian (& sometimes Swedish) language classes are offered in addition to a Danish choir, Scandinavian cultural classes, events, festivals, & lectures.
- Scandinavia House . . . New York, New York — offers Danish, Norwegian & Swedish language classes in addition to a wide range of Nordic classes and events. These classes are offered through New York University's School of Continuing & Professional Studies.
- Scandinavian Language Institute . . . (co-located with the Nordic Heritage Museum in Seattle Washington) offers language classes & translating services in the Pacific Northwest. You can reach Ed Egerdahl, the Director by email.
- Scandinavian School of San Francisco . . . offers a preschool programs &additional Swedish language programs (K-12) for Scandinavian children where they can speak their native language. Summer camps (9am-3pm weekdays) are available for preschoolers and school aged children (K-3). In addition for adults eager to learn Danish, Norwegian or Swedish, evening classes are offered.
- Swedish American Museum Center . . . Chicago, Illinois — offers Swedish crafts, programs, films, cultural events, and a wonderful museum (including a children's museum for ages 3-12).
- Swedish Cultural Center . . . Seattle, Washington offers events including cultural, Swedish language classes, groups, folk dancing and more.
- University of California, Berkeley . . . offers Scandinavian classes in history, literature (saga, mythology, literature, & drama), cinema, & language (Danish, Finnish, Norwegian & Swedish).
- University of California, Los Angeles . . . offers Scandinavian language (Danish, Finnish, Norwegian, Sámi & Swedish), literature, drama, cinema, society and culture classes.
- University of Colorado, Boulder . . . has a Nordic Studies Program offering a wide variety of historical, cultural & literary courses. They offer Swedish language instruction & tutoring in Icelandic & Norwegian. Various Nordic study abroad programs & Nordic Club & film series are also offered.
- University of Florida, Gainesville . . .offers Swedish language & cultural classes.
- University of Illinois, Urbana. . . has a Scandinavian Studies program covering film, literature and culture. Swedish language classes and events are also available. Two study abroad programs offered (Sweden and Denmark).
- University of Massachusetts, Amherst . . . has a German and Scandinavian Studies program that offers Finnish & Swedish language classes in addition to a few literature courses.
- University of Michigan, Ann Arbor . . . offers Swedish language classes in addition to Scandinavian civilization, and Nordic mythology courses. Swedish business internship programs offered. This is offered under the Scandinavian Studies program in the Germanic Languages & Literature department. Special events and lectures round out the program.
- University of Minnesota, Minneapolis . . . offers Danish, Finnish, Modern Icelandic, Norwegian & Swedish language classes, in addition to offering a Finnish Studies program, study abroad programs and an extensive collections of Scandinavian material in it's libraries.
- University of Oregon, Eugene . . . offers language (Danish, Finnish, Norwegian, Swedish & Old Norse [reading knowledge]) in addition to Scandinavian cultural, history & literature classes. The Dept. of German and Scandinavian offers study-abroad programs (Denmark, Finland, Norway & Sweden).
- University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia offers Swedish language classes through the Germanic Languages & Literature Dept. Various events or lectures are available on Swedish topics.
- University of Texas, Austin . . . through it's Dept. of Germanic Studies offers Scandinavia cinema, culture (including the Sámi), literature, & language classes (Danish, Norwegian & Swedish).
- University of Washington . . . Seattle, Washington — has a Scandinavian Studies Program including an undergraduate, graduate, summer and study abroad program. Courses include languages (Danish, Finnish, Norwegian & Swedish), literature, cinema, and drama.
- University of Wisconsin at Madison . . . offers many classes through it's Department of Scandinavian Studies including language (Danish, Finnish, Icelandic, Norwegian, Old-Norse, & Swedish) in addition to Scandinavian linguistics, history, literature, culture (including the Sámi) & folklore classes. They also have online courses.
- Vassar College . . . Poughkeepsie, New York — offers Swedish through their Self-Instructional Language Program.
- Vesterheim . . . Decorah, Iowa — offers cultural and crafts classes, events & workshops. They also have a wonderful Norwegian-American museum.
