Daughters of Norway INSITUTES NEW LODGE IN Willamette Valley, OR, AGNES MATHILDE WERGELAND LODGE #52– October 2nd

Lise Løken, speaker at Agnes Matilde Weregland Lodge #52, Daughters of Norway, institution in Eugene OR (in Oslo Bunad) and Grand Lodge President Ellen Hinds, on Oct. 2, 2011

Judy Hadlock, Grand Lodge Secretary (lf) and, Agnes Weregland Lodge #52 president, Traci Klink, with Charter, Oct. 2, 2011, Eugene, OR.

Hipp hipp hurrah!!  Our 28th lodge, Agnes Mathilde Wergeland #52, was instituted by Grand Lodge President, Ellen Hinds, and Grand Lodge Secretary, Judy Hadlock, on October 2 in Eugene, OR.  Colorful costumes, historic displays, music, and a full smorgasbord brought a festive atmosphere to the ceremony and celebration.  The hall was filled with lodge officers, members, family and community guests, as well as members of other lodges and organizations, gathered for the occasion.  The new lodge is the result of women expressing interest in Daughters of Norway at the organization’s booth at the Junction City Scandinavian Festival.  For the past year these energetic and motivated women worked toward this exciting day.

The lodge’s namesake, Agnes Mathilde Wergeland (1857-1914), was the first Norwegian woman to earn a Ph.D.  Strong and independent, Agnes immigrated to America to study because there were no opportunities for women in higher education in Norway.  Although she endured hardship in late 19th-century America, she persevered and became a well-known professor of history at the University of Wyoming.  She was a pianist (having studied with Edvard Grieg), a watercolor artist, and an eloquent poet.  In 2007, a monument to her was dedicated at the Western Norway Emigration Center. The Daughters of Norway played a major role in that endeavor and representatives of the organization were on hand at its unveiling, including Janet Ruud, Organizational Consultant who assisted the new Willamette Valley lodge.

Lise Løken, speaker and specialist on Agnes Mathilde Weregland, speaking at Agnes Weregland Lodge #52 institution, Oct. 2, 2011, Eugene, OR.

The keynote speaker at the institution of the new Willamette Valley lodge was Lise Løken, a scholar who has studied Agnes Mathilde Weregland extensively.  Ms. Løken traveled from Norway to attend the event and what an exciting and meaningful experience for all to hear her speak of this amazing woman.  In addition, following the event, the Daughters of Norway received a letter of good wishes from Her Majesty Queen Sonja of Norway.  A special greeting indeed!

Anyone wishing to become a charter member of this lodge will have 30 days from October 2 to sign the charter and should contact President Traci Klink at 541-740-1667 to do so.  Members meet every month on the fourth Saturday at 10am in Dr. Gale Fletchall Hall, 5th Av. & Greenwood St., Junction City, OR. Congratulations to all involved!

BOOKS & MOVIES TO CHECK OUT

Max Manus – Man of War (2008) is now (July 2011) out on DVD for purchase or rental (Netflix). This dramatic movie is about one of the most brilliant saboteurs in the Norwegian Resistance movement during WWII. Learn more about the struggles Norwegian faced during WWII under Nazi occupation. It is loaded with great action and a wonderful story. A must see movie! A movie clip is available at this site.

The 2009 Danish film Applause is now showing in some US theatres now. This award winning Danish picture opened in Minneapolis in April at the Minneapolis-St. Paul Film Festival (Apr. 21-24). On May 13, it returns to the St. Anthony Main Theatre in general release. Check online if it might be appearing elsewhere.

A gripping and disturbing novel by Roslund & Hellström, an international best-seller and winner of the best Swedish crime novel, Three Seconds, is a must read. The facts of how judicial systems in democratic countries are being manipulated is appalling. However, the book really is a great thriller! Some papers have classified this book on the same caliber as Stieg Larsson's. You'll have to read it for yourself to find out if you agree!

Other good books to give to kids or Viking lovers would include the three books in the Sagabow Sagas by Judson Roberts. Also, for those interested in books for Children and Young Adults translated into English click here.

Add to your reading list the mystery novels (such as The Devil's Star, The Redbreast, Nemesis, etc.) available in many libraries and in bookstores by the amazing Norwegian writer: Jo Nesbø. His writing style will keep you on your toes as you learn how Detective/Inspector Harry Hole solves his cases. He is as popular in Norway as Steig Larsson is here and in Sweden!

A new movie, Millennium – the Story, about Steig Larsson and the phenomenal success behind his mystery movies and books is out now. Lodges interested in showing the movie should contact the webmaster. Steig Larsson's three books, now movies, include: The Girl with Dragon Tattoo (2009), The Girl Who Played with Fire (2010), and The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest (2009). All highly recommended as a must read for mystery lovers.

For those interested in home decorating, their is a wonderful new book (in libraries and online), Lars Bolander's Scandinavian Design (Vendome Press, NY), that opens your eyes to Scandinavian decors. Colorful pictures with explanation of why the Nordic people decorate the way they do. A great coffee table book or book to share at a meeting as a program!

PRESS RELEASE: GRAND LODGE PRESIDENT AND D of N DELEGATION ATTEND RECEPTION FOR US AMBASSADOR TO NORWAY

Grand Lodge President Ellen Hinds greets US Ambassador to Norway in Seattle on Jan. 6, 2011

Ellen Hinds, President Grand Lodge, with US Ambassador to Norway Barry White at special reception at Nordic Heritage Museum, Jan. 6, 2011, Seattle

The New Year got off to a busy and exciting start for Grand Lodge President, Ellen Hinds, as she was invited to lead a delegation of Grand Lodge Daughters of Norway Officers, and Lodge Presidents from the Seattle Area, to attend a reception for United States Ambassador to Norway, Barry White. The event was held at the Nordic Heritage Museum in Seattle.

After having an opportunity to tour parts of the Museum, including the Victor Borge exhibit, attendees were treated to a very informative presentation by our hosts and Ambassador White where we were invited to ask questions of the Ambassador.

A highlight of the evening, especially for Grand Lodge President Ellen Hinds, was a comment included in the remarks of Consul Kim Nesselquist as to the positive energy and dynamic growth of Daughters of Norway. His remarks were received with smiles and applause and our delegation couldn't have been prouder to be Daughters of Norway.
