ABOUT
The Grand Lodge Daughters of Norway offers scholarships to full-time college, university, technical or vocational students who are either a member of, or related to a member of the Daughters of Norway. Details follow on other requirements. The number of awards varies with the funds, but at least one award of $1,000 is offered each year, with a second award in Convention years. Application forms are also sent to Subordinate Lodge secretaries, who have them available for members during the spring months.
WINNERS OF 2011 SCHOLARSHIP ANNOUNCED
This year three Daughters of Norway Scholarships of $1,000 each were awarded. Two of these were sponsored by the Grand Lodge and one by Anna Kolbjornsdatter Lodge #36 of San Francisco. The winners, in alphabetical order are:
- Aileen Andres – attending American University, Washington DC (Major/Minor: International Development/Economics & Spanish)
- Allan Brudwick – attending the University of Washington, Seattle, WA (Major: Mechanical Engineering)
- Camille Journey – attending Whitworth University, Spokane, WA (Major: Psychology)
The alternate selction is:
- Carly Thomson – attending Shorleine Community College, Shoreline, WA (Major: Dental Hygiene)
The scholarship Committee had a difficult choice in selecting the winners. They received 14 qualifying applications, representing 8 Daughters of Norway lodges. Every one of the candidates was impressive as a scholar, as a person contributing to their community, and in their goals for the future. Members can be proud of all these young people. The organization thanks the committee and chairperson for their excellent work.
WHO CAN APPLY
A scholarship may only be granted to a student registered in a full-time program at an accredited institution of higher education, i.e. college, university, technical school or vocational school. The student must have completed at least one full year or have at least sophomore standing and have a grade point average of 2.7 or better. The recipient must be a member of the Daughters of Norway or be related to a member. The Scholarship Committee will determine other pertinent criteria in its selection of prospective recipients. "An applicant may apply for a Grand Lodge Scholarship as often as desired, but a recipient of an award may not re-apply." (Constitution of the Daughters of Norway, Article X)
TIPS
Contact the people who will write the recommendations as soon as possible, as it take time to write recommendations. It is your responsibility to follow up and make sure the recommendations will reach you in time to mail by the deadline.
